Oral Cyst and Tumor Removal Surgery

What are Cysts and Tumors in the Jaws?

Oral and maxillofacial cysts are abnormal, fluid-filled sacs that can develop in the jawbones or soft tissues of the mouth. Tumors are solid masses of abnormal tissue. While most of these are benign (non-cancerous), they can grow and cause significant damage to the jawbone, teeth, and surrounding structures if left untreated. Symptoms may include swelling, pain, tooth movement, or a visible lump.

Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent extensive bone loss and to ensure the most conservative and effective treatment. Our expert maxillofacial surgeons are highly experienced in diagnosing and managing a wide range of these lesions.

Conditions We Treat

We provide comprehensive surgical management for a variety of common and rare oral and maxillofacial lesions, including:

  • **Odontogenic Cysts**: Cysts that originate from tooth-forming tissues, such as Radicular cysts (from a tooth root) and Dentigerous cysts (around an impacted tooth).
  • **Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumor (KCOT)**: A benign, but aggressive tumor with a high recurrence rate that requires specialized surgical management.
  • **Ameloblastoma**: A rare, benign tumor that can be locally aggressive, necessitating careful and complete surgical removal.
  • **Odontoma**: A common benign tumor composed of tooth-like materials.
  • **Fibro-osseous Lesions**: A group of benign conditions where normal bone is replaced by fibrous tissue and abnormal bone, such as fibrous dysplasia or ossifying fibroma.
  • **Soft Tissue Cysts & Tumors**: Including Mucoceles (cysts on the lip or cheek) and Ranulas (cysts under the tongue).

The Surgical Treatment Process

Our approach to treating cysts and tumors is tailored to the specific type, size, and location of the lesion to ensure the best possible outcome while preserving function and aesthetics.

  1. Diagnosis & Biopsy: The first step is to accurately diagnose the lesion. This involves clinical examination, advanced imaging (like OPG or CBCT scans), and a biopsy to get a definitive pathological diagnosis.
  2. Surgical Planning: We use the diagnostic information to plan the surgical procedure. For cysts, this may involve enucleation (complete removal of the sac), while tumors may require a wider excision or resection of a section of the jawbone.
  3. Surgical Removal: The procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia. We meticulously remove the lesion, taking care to preserve adjacent nerves, teeth, and other vital structures.
  4. Reconstruction (if required): For larger defects left after removal, we may perform bone grafting or other reconstructive procedures to restore the jawbone's integrity and prepare for future dental implants.
  5. Post-Operative Care: We provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery. Regular follow-up appointments are essential to monitor healing and check for any signs of recurrence.
