Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

A modern approach to saving your natural tooth from decay and infection.

Root Canal Treatment

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure to treat an infected or inflamed tooth pulp. The pulp is the soft tissue inside your tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When this pulp becomes infected, it can cause severe pain and lead to an abscess. RCT is the process of removing the damaged pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the tooth, and then sealing it to prevent future infection.

Why Might You Need an RCT?

  • Persistent Tooth Pain: Ranging from mild sensitivity to severe, constant pain.
  • Swelling in Gums: Swollen, tender gums around the painful tooth.
  • Sensitivity to Temperature: Prolonged sensitivity to hot and cold foods or drinks.
  • Discoloration of the Tooth: A dark or gray color indicates nerve damage.
  • Pimple on the Gums: A "gum boil" or abscess indicates infection.
  • Preserves the Natural Tooth: Avoids extraction and maintains your natural smile.

The Root Canal Procedure

  1. Diagnosis: Your dentist will use X-rays to assess the damage.
  2. Numbing: Local anesthesia is administered for a pain-free experience.
  3. Pulp Removal: The infected pulp is carefully removed from the tooth's interior.
  4. Cleaning and Shaping: The canals are cleaned, disinfected, and shaped.
  5. Filling and Sealing: The canals are filled with a biocompatible material and sealed.
  6. Restoration: A crown or filling is placed to protect the tooth and restore its function.

Myths vs. Reality About Root Canals

  • Myth: Root canals are painful.
Reality: Modern techniques and anesthesia make the procedure painless. The pain you feel is from the infection, and the RCT relieves it.
  • Myth: It's better to just extract the tooth.
Reality: Saving your natural tooth is always the best option. Extraction can lead to shifting of other teeth and jawbone deterioration.

Aftercare and Recovery

After your procedure, it's normal to experience some sensitivity, but this will subside. We will provide detailed aftercare instructions, which typically include avoiding chewing on the treated tooth until the final restoration is placed, and maintaining good oral hygiene.
