Specialized Surgical Treatment for Salivary Glands

Providing precise and safe care for a wide range of salivary gland conditions.

Salivary Gland Surgery

What are Salivary Glands?

The salivary glands produce saliva, which is essential for digestion and maintaining oral health. There are three major pairs of salivary glands: the parotid glands (located in the cheeks in front of the ears), the submandibular glands (under the jaw), and the sublingual glands (under the tongue). Various conditions can affect these glands, including tumors, stones, and infections, often requiring surgical intervention for diagnosis and treatment. Our maxillofacial surgeons are highly trained in delicate surgical procedures in this area, carefully preserving facial nerves and other vital structures.

Conditions We Treat with Salivary Gland Surgery

We provide surgical expertise for the following conditions affecting the salivary glands:

  • **Salivary Gland Tumors**: Removal of benign (e.g., Pleomorphic Adenoma, Warthin's Tumor) and malignant (cancerous) tumors. Most salivary gland tumors are benign, but accurate diagnosis is crucial.
  • **Salivary Stones (Sialolithiasis)**: Surgical removal of stones that block the flow of saliva, causing pain and swelling.
  • **Chronic Infections (Sialadenitis)**: Surgical removal of a gland that is repeatedly infected and inflamed.
  • **Cysts**: Removal of cysts, such as Mucoceles and Ranulas, that form in the salivary glands or ducts.

The Surgical Process

Our surgical approach is designed to be as minimally invasive as possible while ensuring the complete and safe removal of the affected tissue.

  1. Diagnosis: The process begins with a thorough clinical examination, and often imaging tests such as a CT scan, MRI, or ultrasound. A fine-needle aspiration biopsy may be performed to determine if a lump is benign or malignant.
  2. Surgical Planning: Our surgeons meticulously plan the procedure, paying special attention to the location of the facial nerve, which runs through the parotid gland, to preserve its function and prevent facial paralysis.
  3. Surgical Removal: The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the condition, the entire gland or just the affected portion is removed. We use techniques like **parotidectomy** (parotid gland removal) or **submandibular gland excision**, using discreet incisions.
  4. Post-Operative Care: Patients are provided with detailed instructions for wound care and pain management. We schedule follow-up appointments to monitor healing and ensure a smooth recovery.
