Expert Diagnosis and Management of Oral & Maxillofacial Diseases

Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment for any oral condition.

Oral Pathology and Biopsy

What is Oral Pathology?

Oral pathology is a dental specialty focused on the diagnosis and study of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. This includes the teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks, jaws, and salivary glands. The field is essentially the "detective work" of oral health, identifying the root cause of a lesion, sore, or abnormal growth. A precise diagnosis is crucial for guiding the correct treatment, especially in cases where a condition could be benign or malignant.

Conditions We Diagnose and Manage

We provide diagnostic services for a wide range of oral and maxillofacial conditions, including:

  • **Oral Cancer & Pre-cancerous Lesions**: Early detection of squamous cell carcinoma and potentially malignant lesions like leukoplakia and erythroplakia.
  • **Cysts & Tumors**: Accurate diagnosis of both benign and malignant growths in the jaw and soft tissues.
  • **Chronic Oral Ulcers**: Evaluation of non-healing sores or ulcers that may be a sign of a serious underlying condition.
  • **Immune-mediated Diseases**: Diagnosis of conditions like oral lichen planus, pemphigus, and mucous membrane pemphigoid.
  • **Infectious Diseases**: Identification of fungal, viral (e.g., HPV), or bacterial infections in the mouth.

Our Diagnostic Process: The Oral Biopsy

When a suspicious lesion or growth is found, a biopsy is the gold standard for accurate diagnosis. It is a simple, minor procedure performed at our clinic:

  1. Initial Consultation: The process begins with a clinical examination of the lesion, its size, location, and appearance. We discuss your medical history and any symptoms you may be experiencing.
  2. Biopsy Procedure: A small, representative tissue sample is taken from the lesion. This is a quick and relatively painless procedure performed under local anesthesia. For most lesions, no stitches are needed, and the site heals quickly.
  3. Pathology Report: The tissue sample is sent to a specialized oral pathology lab where it is analyzed under a microscope by a board-certified pathologist. The lab provides a detailed report with the definitive diagnosis.
  4. Diagnosis & Treatment Planning: Once the pathology report is available, we schedule a follow-up consultation to discuss the diagnosis and outline a comprehensive treatment plan, whether it involves surgical removal, medication, or long-term monitoring.
