Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, commonly known as ear surgery or ear pinning, is a surgical procedure to improve the shape, position, or proportion of the ear. It is most frequently performed to correct prominent ears that stick out from the head, a condition that can cause significant self-consciousness and emotional distress, especially in children. Otoplasty can also address other congenital ear deformities or ear-related issues caused by injury. The procedure is safe and effective for patients of all ages, from children over the age of five to adults.

What Otoplasty Can Address

The procedure is effective in correcting a variety of ear-related concerns, including:

  • Prominent or protruding ears on one or both sides.
  • Disproportionately large ears (macrotia).
  • Correcting previous ear surgery.
  • Repairing the earlobe.
  • Correcting congenital or traumatic ear deformities.

The Surgical Procedure

The otoplasty procedure is tailored to your specific needs and goals. The general process includes:

  1. Consultation & Planning: Our expert surgeon will assess your ear structure and discuss your desired outcome, creating a personalized surgical plan.
  2. Anesthesia: Otoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation for adults, or general anesthesia for children.
  3. Incision: A small, discreet incision is made on the back of the ear, allowing the surgeon to access the cartilage. This placement ensures minimal visible scarring.
  4. Reshaping & Pinning: The surgeon will either remove excess cartilage or use permanent sutures to reshape the ear and pin it closer to the head.
  5. Closing: The incisions are closed with fine sutures, and a protective head bandage is applied to support the new ear position during the initial healing phase.

Recovery and Long-Term Results

A protective head bandage must be worn for about one week. You may experience minor discomfort, swelling, and bruising, which can be managed with medication. After the bandage is removed, a soft headband is recommended at night for a few weeks to protect the ears. The results are permanent and become fully visible once the swelling subsides, restoring a more balanced and harmonious facial appearance.
