What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention from a dental professional to save a tooth, stop severe bleeding, or alleviate intense pain. If you are unsure, it's always best to contact us.

Severe Toothache

Intense, throbbing, or persistent pain that can't be relieved with over-the-counter medication is a sign of a serious issue, such as an infection or abscess.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Act quickly! If you can find the tooth, gently rinse it with water and try to place it back in the socket. If that's not possible, keep it moist in milk and call us immediately.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

Save any pieces of the tooth you can. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the face to reduce swelling. Come in as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Abscess or Swelling

A dental abscess is a serious infection that can be life-threatening if left untreated. Symptoms include a painful, pimple-like swelling on the gums, fever, and facial swelling.

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown exposes the sensitive underlying tooth structure. This can cause pain and further damage. Book an emergency appointment to have it repaired or replaced.

Objects Caught Between Teeth

Try to gently remove the object with floss. Do not use sharp or pointed tools, as this can cause injury. If the object remains stuck, call us to have it safely removed.

What to Do Before You Arrive

While you are on your way to our clinic, here are a few things you can do to manage your situation:

  • For pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen (if you are not allergic) and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek.
  • For bleeding, use a piece of gauze or a clean cloth and apply gentle, steady pressure to the area for 10-15 minutes.
  • Rinse your mouth with a solution of warm salt water to clean the area and reduce discomfort.

Note: If you have a severe injury to your jaw, head, or face, please go to the nearest hospital emergency room first.
